Buck is a beautiful 2010, 15h grade Quarter Horse gelding seeking a home as a companion or light trail horse. Due to health complications, his owner is unable to continue caring for Buck and his pal, Smarty Pants, and has sadly made the decision to move him along to someone who can give him the time and attention he deserves. Upon purchasing Buck, it was apparent to his owner that he was treated roughly. He lacked confidence and trust in people, though he tried his heart out to be a good boy. With lots of time, reassurance and patience, his owner was able gain his trust and he turned into a great all-around horse. His owner is hoping to find someone of at least an intermediate experience level both on the ground and under saddle, who can continue to treat him with kindness and patience for the rest of his days.
Buck is a good boy to handle and work around. He has excellent ground manners, stands well for grooming and tacking up, picks up all four hooves, and stands for fly spray. Buck is fond of treats, and will bend and stretch for a snack. His owner says he is a very smart boy with an excellent memory. He would be an excellent candidate for someone wanting to focus on ground or liberty work.
It has been a little over one year since Buck was last ridden, so he will need someone who can evaluate him and ease him back into work. When in regular work, Buck was being ridden Western on the trail. It is unknown how he would do on the trail by himself, but he is great riding out with other horses. He has been regularly trailered offsite to ride, so he's used to loading up and being ridden away from home. His owner says he has a good spook-in-place and a level head while out and about. That being said, he does depend on his rider to reassure him that he's a good boy and lend him their confidence. An intermediate rider with patience and experience would be ideal for this boy.
Buck has been diagnosed with navicular in his left front, which his owner currently manages with corrective heart bar shoes with pads on both fronts, a yearly injection of Osphos in the spring, and Bute as needed before/after a ride or on farrier days. Considering this diagnosis, he cannot be jumped and would be best suited for someone looking to take easy rides at the walk and maybe some trot/jog on occasion.
Buck is an easy-keeper, only requiring one meal per day and free-choice forage. To manage his navicular, he receives a SmartPak joint supplement in his feed each day. Buck ties, stalls, load, bathes, sprays and is good for the vet and farrier. He is UTD on all shots, Coggins and deworming, and is due now for a dental check and farrier. He has been housed with gelding horses, ponies and a mini without issue.
