Awholenewballgame, Jay for short, is a 2006, 16.2h registered Thoroughbred gelding seeking a home due to life changes for his owner making it difficult to afford and spend time with him. Jay retired from the track in 2013, after 32 starts and career earnings of over $185,000. He came to his current owner four years ago. Jay is seeking a home with an intermediate rider looking to enjoy some pleasure and trail riding on the flat.

Jay is overall a very nice boy to work with on the ground and is suitable for an intermediate handler. He is lovingly known around his barn as "best friend Jay", because he is always the first to greet you in the field and he makes friends (or wants to make friends) with every horse he meets. When relaxed, Jay is very easy to handle on the ground, ties and stands for grooming, and is just a love to work around. That being said, Jay lacks confidence when in a new environment or away from other horses, especially if he is not handled regularly. So he can get anxious in those types of scenarios, and relies on his handler to give him patience and reassurance. He occasionally head-bobs when girthing, so taking that process slow is better for him. He's great for lunging and round penning (as you can see in his video).

His owners states that he is great under saddle with an intermediate or above rider who can guide him with confidence and patience. He stands well at the mounting block and responds well in a gentle, double-jointed bit. Jay has been ridden on the trail with other horses and prefers to follow. He's been ridden along the road, on gravel paths, through fields and in the woods. He's game for pretty much everything the trail, except water. The boogieman hides in water, so Jay prefers to just steer clear of it and requires some coaxing from his rider and other horses to cross. Jay has not been ridden in just over a year, so he will need a refresher before getting back into regular work.

Due to molar cupping, Jay requires 3lbs soaked Sentinel Active Senior feed twice per day, along with alfalfa pellets and beet pulp. Turnout on lush pasture and possibly a treatment for gastric ulcers may assist with his weight and enable his feed to be cut back.

This boy is UTD on everything and ready to go! He is currently barefoot, but may require shoes if ridden on harder/rockier terrain. He is good in a stall, but can also live out 24/7. He is currently turned out with both mares and geldings, and is submissive and gets along very well with everyone. So he would make an excellent companion for any herd dynamic.

If you feel you can give Jay the attention and care that he deserves, let us know!
