Description

Our public educational classes are designed to welcome everyone with an interest in horses — from the casual horse enthusiast to the dedicated owner, aspiring professional, and seasoned equestrian.

Offered throughout the year, these classes cover a wide range of topics related to equines and equine ownership. Whether you’re looking to better understand daily care, improve management practices, expand your knowledge of health and wellness, or refine hands-on skills, our programs are built to provide practical, real-world education you can immediately apply.

Each session is thoughtfully structured to combine classroom-style learning with interactive, hands-on experiences whenever possible. Participants gain not only foundational knowledge, but also the confidence and competence to make informed decisions for the horses in their care.

No matter where you are on your equine journey, our classes offer a welcoming, supportive environment to learn, ask questions, and continue growing as a horseperson.

Equine Wellness & Welfare Series (3 of 4): Practical Lameness for Horse Owners

Date: Saturday, July 18th

Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm

Cost: $25 - lunch not provided

Understanding lameness is one of the most valuable skills a horse owner can develop, and this class offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the process. With the assistance of Dr. Alisha Bretz, DVM of Monocacy Equine Veterinary Associates, participants will learn how to recognize early signs of lameness, determine when veterinary intervention is warranted, and better communicate their observations to a professional. Attendees will observe a real veterinary lameness evaluation, including visual gait assessment and commonly used diagnostic techniques, while gaining insight into how veterinarians isolate the source of discomfort. The class will also review treatment options for some of the most common causes of lameness, helping owners better understand the reasoning behind veterinary recommendations. By the end of the session, participants will feel more confident identifying problems promptly and making informed decisions that support soundness and long-term welfare.

Equine Wellness & Welfare Series (4 of 4): Quality of Life & End-of-Life Decisions

Date: Saturday, August 22nd (date is tentative and subject to change)

Time: 10:00am - 2:00pm

Cost: $25 - lunch not provided

One of the most difficult responsibilities of horse ownership is knowing when to say goodbye, and this compassionate, educational class is designed to help owners face that reality with clarity and confidence. With the assistance of Dr. Justin Sobota, MS, MSM, DVM of South Mountain Equine, the session will guide participants through assessing a horse’s quality of life, recognizing signs of decline, and determining when continued treatment is no longer in the horse’s best interest. Humane euthanasia will be discussed openly and respectfully, including how the process works and how to make thoughtful, welfare-centered decisions. While often associated with senior horses, emergencies and sudden injuries can occur at any age, making this information valuable for every owner. Attendees will leave better prepared to navigate one of the hardest moments in horse care with compassion, preparedness, and the horse’s comfort at the forefront.
