Luna is a 2024, grade Quarter Horse filly who is seeking a patient, experienced home through direct placement.

Her story began when her owner rescued Luna’s mother and older sister from the Bowie Auction. Both mares were completely unhandled, and it was later discovered that Luna’s mother was in foal. Luna was born in the spring of 2024 as a surprise addition to the family!

In the summer of 2024, Luna’s owner reached out to our program after recognizing that Luna, her dam, and her sister would be better served in homes with the experience and resources needed to provide them with the training necessary to be successful. Luna’s dam and sister were quickly placed in new homes, but shortly afterward, Luna sustained a severe laceration to her right side and had to be temporarily withdrawn from the program while she recovered.

Luna is now fully recovered and ready to resume her search for a new home! One positive outcome of her recovery period was that the treatment she required gave her the opportunity to become accustomed to regular handling. As a result, Luna has developed a solid foundation and can now be caught, haltered, led, groomed, and have her front hooves picked up without issue. She has previously had her front hooves trimmed without sedation but still needs additional work with handling her hind feet. She was recently sedated for a trim so that all four hooves could be safely completed. Luna is current on her Coggins and vaccinations. Based on her current height (roughly 13.3h) and her dam's height, we are predicting that she will top out in the 14-15h range.

Luna is currently turned out with one other mare who holds the dominant position in their relationship, which has been beneficial in helping teach Luna appropriate herd manners and keeping her youthful confidence in check. She spends her days in a dry lot and is turned out on grass at night. Luna is also a very easy keeper and is currently carrying more weight than ideal, so she would benefit from a consistent exercise and weight-loss plan as she continues to mature.

Luna would do best with an experienced owner who is comfortable continuing her training or has the resources to work with a qualified trainer. While she has a good foundation of basic handling, she will benefit from continued work with picking up all four hooves, desensitization, and reinforcing good manners. She has already worn a bareback pad without concern and was completely unfazed by the experience. With continued training, she should be ready to begin her under-saddle education before long.

As a young horse with very little formal training, Luna is essentially a blank slate with unlimited potential for the right person. Her right-side scar is strictly cosmetic and is not sensitive to palpation or touch. Once Luna returns to a more ideal weight, the divot associated with the scar may also become less noticeable.
