Sam the Soldier ("Soldier") is a 2001, 16.3h registered Thoroughbred gelding looking for a new home as a companion, or as a riding horse to the right person. Over the years, Soldier has been used for intermediate lessons, jumper shows, hunter paces and trails. He is seeking a new home due to life changes with his owner.

Soldier can be used for riding, but it would need to be to someone with experience. Soldier seems to have some breathing issues when the weather is hot and humid. Nothing has ever been officially diagnosed. As a result, he can't be worked as much, if at all, during the hot summer months. The challenge has been that he can be a bit difficult under saddle when he first goes back into work, but is fine once he gets going in a regular schedule. If someone would be interested in riding him, he'd need a more advanced rider until he gets back into a routine. His owner says that ideally he could be ridden English pleasure/trail 4-5 days/week.

The day we visited Soldier, it was warm but not humid. We did notice his breathing seemed to be a bit heavier than normal, but he otherwise seemed comfortable. His owner put him on the lunge and put him through the paces at the walk/trot/canter. He did very well in both directions! He was sound, picked up both leads with ease and was very responsive to vocal cues. We were even more impressed (and we think his owner was as well) that he was so well-behaved, since it had been 1-2 years since last lunged!

Soldier lives mostly outside, only coming in during the hot, humid days. He lives in a mixed herd and tends to fall in the middle of the herd heirarchy. He's barefoot, but may need front shoes if put back into work. He stands well for the grooming, vet, farrier and baths. He loads and ties, and will be UTD on everything prior to leaving for his new home. Soldier will go to his new home with all of his tack and supplies. Let us know if you can give him a great home!
