Volunteers offer invaluable support to DEFHR. They work with horses, the petting zoo animals, visitors and staff, independently and in groups, on weekdays and weekends. They learn, serve a vital role in horse rehabilitation, help with education and outreach activities, and have fun!
Before you start, you are required to attend a Volunteer orientation. They are held on the second
Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
(See Events Calendar.)
Please contact us if you are interested in attending by emailing
info@defhr.org
or calling the office at 301-854-5037. THANK YOU!!
When attending orientation, you need to wear closed-toe shoes or boots to participate in the hands-on
segment. If you are under the age of 18, you must attend with a parent or
legal guardian so they may understand the rules and benefits of volunteering
before you start.
Volunteer time at DEFHR can be used to satisfy community service hours
required for high school graduation. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old,
unless accompanied by a parent. Parents of youths under the age of 12 must
work alongside their child and supervise them.
- No horse experience is required.
- pre-registration for orientation is required.
Here is the link to
our volunteer application and release form. You
may print them and bring them with you to orientation. Youths under the age of
18 will need a parent's signature on the forms as well as their own to begin
volunteering. Both completed forms are required before you begin volunteering.
(You may download Adobe Acrobat here!) If
you are unable to download the forms, you may pick them up at orientation
and bring the completed forms with you on your first volunteer day.
