The annual Maryland Horse World Expo is kicking off its 14th year during the weekend of January 21-24 and Days End volunteers and staff as well as horse-lovers of all ages will be flocking to the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.

This extensive retail trade show of over 300 vendors offers the horse-enthusiast an infinite array of services and products from boots to breeches to Breyer horses. Booths of books, videos, jewelry, Beanie Babies, and tack lined the Cow Palace. Be sure to visit the Days End Farm Booths #205 & #206 as well as Booth B7 & B8 in Breed Alley where we will have a horse on display and available for adoption. Both booths are in the Cow Palace.  Read more...

Horse Rescued from Sinkhole in Woodsboro, MD

Brooke Bierman-Vrany, Chief of Emergency Services and Assistant Director of Days End Farm Horse Rescue, received a phone call late in the afternoon, January 18, about a horse that had fallen into a sinkhole. She and Days End Farm's Rescue Team hit the ground running to respond to the disaster. A 30-year-old Appaloosa had fallen into a sinkhole that was between 12 and 15 feet deep, and the surrounding area was muddy from the recent rain.  Read more...

It's a Blizzard

Kathy Howe, Executive Director

With pending snow in the forecast, Days End Farm's Emergency Plan went into action!

On Friday, December 18, aside from the normal everyday chores, the staff and volunteers at Days End Farm spent most of the day preparing the farm and the horses for the blizzard that was forecast to hit that evening. From past experience we knew that volunteers and staff were going to have a problem traveling to Days End because of the forecast, so most of the barn staff would spend the evening at the farm that night. This would allow them to be available for the 8 pm feed (if the snow started early) as well as the 8 am feed, when the blizzard would be blowing snow everywhere and the ground would be covered. Read more...

Ambassador Takes the Cake

Sue Mitchell, Development Director

I always wish I had a little something special to give Days End Farm Ambassadors...you know - small tokens of appreciation.  And if I did, Steve Erlitz would have taken the cake this week.

One of my challenges is the reality that exposure and visibility aren't quantifiable. What that means is that I know for a fact that the time and energy we put into keeping our name in lights will pay off. I just don't know exactly how. Oh, and I can't prove it either.

Steve is a longtime volunteer who sits on the Development Committee among other things. With next to no prompting, Steve took the initiative to talk about Days End when his employer spotlighted him in an email (circulation 1,400 national federal employers and contractors) promoting Steve's community volunteer work and his workplace giving support. By the way, the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), better known as workplace giving, generates more than $175,000 in donations for us each year.

I absolutely love how he had the foresight to talk up Days End, explain the many hats he wears for us, educate on horse ownership, and still push to find our boy Solo a forever home. Read more...

Open the Door and We Shall Come
Sue Mitchell, Development Director

Most of us know what it feels like to pinch pennies, don't we? And if we have learned nothing else in the last two years, we may have a different perspective now on what in life are true necessities and what are not.  And maybe we have gratefully, or begrudgingly, accepted getting by with less.

What about your employer? Maybe they have cut expenses just to stay afloat in ways that really sting. They know that freezing pay raises and cutting programs make you unhappy employees. They see that. They get it. And they worry about losing you too. But what can they offer that doesn't cost anything yet might make you appreciate them just a little?  Read more...

Days End Helps Horses in Kalamazoo

Mark Vanderberg is an Animal Control oficer in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mark attended our LART training in July 2008. He recently sent the letter below regarding the training he received:

My name is Mark Vanderberg, I am an Animal Control Officer in Kalamazoo County Michigan. If you don't remember me that's OK, I will never forget my time at Days end.

I have used the LART training already, I believe it may have saved some horses from injury, and possibly some human injury.

I had 5 horses out, using a long rope and several people, we were able to corral them and get halters and ropes on them. The horses were freaked out as it was because they were out in the pouring cold rain, at 11 PM. on November 23rd. Read more...

Volunteer Update

Caroline Robertson, Volunteer Coordinator

A new year brings about the feeling of new beginnings.  In keeping with that tradition I have chosen the beginning of 2010 to roll out some new ideas that I hope will make your volunteer experience with us at DEFHR more rewarding while at the same time allowing me to improve the effectiveness of your hard work.

New-Survey Please!

One way to ensure your volunteer experience with DEFHR is better is to improve feedback.  Please help me get more feedback by filling out a volunteer survey, which all new volunteers will receive upon the completion of their first 20 hours when the color assignment forms are being filled out.  For veteran volunteers; there will be a folder out by the sign-in book asking you also to please complete a survey.  We intend to make the surveys available online as well.  Once you fill out a survey, just leave it on my desk in the "completed volunteer survey" box the next time you are out at the farm.

New-Sign up to volunteer at the barn or online

With the "Baltimore City 19" impoundment it became necessary to implement a sign-up sheet to ensure we had enough help during the quarantining of the new horses while staff familiarized themselves with the new routine associated with caring for so many new horses at once.  I was pleased to receive very positive feedback equally from volunteers and staff with regards to the sign-up sheet!  Read more...

January Volunter of the Month

Caroline Robertson, Volunteer Coordinator

Jaime Gutierrez-Have you noticed lately that when you need a hammer, wrench or pliers on the farm, you can actually find them?! Well that's because of Jaime's passion for DEFHR and fantastic organizational skills! Jamie came to us in August of 2009, starting literally the day after orientation. As a recovering stroke patient, during his first weeks here, Jamie shared with me that while in the hospital his doctor essentially told him that he had two options, to get busy dying or get busy living. Jaime took stock of his life and through that process remembered that some of his happiest moments in life were spent with horses back in his homeland of Colombia and with that, the decision was made. Jaime decided he was going to get busy living and horses were going to be a part of his life again. Read more...

Barn Update

Erin Ochoa, Director of Programs

To say the least, this month has been a hard one for us. Yet, with a record number of horses and bitter cold weather, the staff and dedicated volunteers have done a great job of keeping our horses happy. We have been blessed this year with electricity reaching the fields, which means the water heaters are keeping water ice free.

Like other farms, our biggest issue this month has been going from muddy ground to frozen, uneven ground, making it hard for the horses walking around in these areas, typically by the gates. Those horses with thin soles are getting sore, and some even have to stay in stalls. Read more...

The Internship Program is now in full swing, after officially starting on December 28th. All have varying degrees of horse knowledge and experience, from beginner to advanced.

The three residential interns are Ashley Poore, Kathy Brown and Erica Tomney. Our non-residental interns are Jonatan Pribluda, Chantel Nelson and Rachel Kehs. Read more...
