Volunteer Orientation

Monthly Volunteer Orientations - All persons wanting to volunteer at Days End Farm must attend an orientation before they can volunteer. Our orientations are held from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month at our farm. All attendees wishing to participate in the hands-on session must wear closed toe shoes or boots.

Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian to attend the orientation. Youths 12 years and older may volunteer without a parent after attending the orientation. Children under 12 may volunteer if a parent volunteers by their side (1 parent - 1 child) providing supervision at all times. Volunteering at Days End Farm is a wonderful family experience. Make it your Family Event!!

    Adoption and Re-homing

    Emergency Rescue 101
    Do you know what to do if your horse is cast in a stall or is down and can’t get up? What if your horse is stuck in mud or on a stream embankment and can’t get free? Get prepared now, it could save your horse’s life. During this course you’ll learn the key rescue functions, application of the rescue straps and the do’s and don’ts of Large Animal Rescue. In this presentation, we will be using practical rescue equipment and a mannequin horse.

    Equine Rehabilitation
    Ever thought about rehabilitating a horse? This lecture will walk you through 20 years of rehabilitation experience, what works and what doesn’t! During our presentation you’ll get the opportunity to review and discuss previous equine cases that involved starvation, abuse and injury. You’ll learn how to optimize your rehabilitation efforts by effectively managing costs and equine care.

March 27, 2010 - 7 p.m. - 11 p.m "Grapes of Hooves," Days End's Spring Wine Tasting Event with a Live and Silent Auction. It will be held at the Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville, MD. April 17-18, 2010 - 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m.- Horse Care Clinic - Level 1 & 2. This two day hands-on clinic, held at Days End Farm, is for long time horse owners, first time horse owners and those planning to buy a horse in the future! Cost of the clinic is $100.Topics are lectured by Equine Professional Instructors and include; Body Condition Scoring, Horse Psychology and Handling, Management and Feeding, Recognizing Illness, First Aid and much more.

May 22, 2010 - Large Animal Rescue Training (LART) $50 per person - held at Days End Farm Horse Rescue - Brooke Vrany, Instructor
Do you know what to do if your horse is cast in a stall, or is down and can’t get up? What about if the horse is stuck in mud? You may not have time for a rescue professional to arrive at the scene. Be prepared now! (This course is taught using a life-size mannequin horse.)

June 5, 2010 - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Volunteer Clean Up Day & Cookout!!
Join us for this team building event of food, fun and camaraderie while helping us bring the farm back to its spring shine just in time for the Spring Carnival. We need your help. Contact Caroline Robertson or call the office at 301-854-5037 to sign up.

    Chores may include the following:
  • Scrubbing the walls of stalls and outbuildings
  • Mending buildings, fences
  • Painting buildings, stalls
  • Mowing, planting flowers, bushes
  • Other jobs that could not be done during winter

    Cookout starts midday at 12 p.m. then back to work! Days End provides this backyard barbeque as a thank you for all who participated in our clean up. Door Prizes will be awarded. Come join!

June 19, 2010 - "Spring Carnival" - Days End Farm is celebrating its biggest family fun day ever! Back by popular demand are the petting zoo, pony / horse rides as well as mounted performances by Days End’s very own rescue horses, grilled lunch, carnival games for the kids, face painting, music, tours, raffle drawings, souvenirs, and Adoption Alley where you can meet horses ready for their forever homes. Also fun are the stick-horse races and coloring contest.

Local businesses are invited to "Sponsor" this year’s event, which draws more than 1,500 local attendees. Various sponsorship levels are available by e-mailing Sue Mitchell or call 301-854-5037. All proceeds from this fun event directly support Days End’s mission: Ensuring quality care and treatment of horses through intervention, education and outreach. Days End Farm rescued more than 1,500 horses from neglect and abuse since their founding in 1989.

July 14-15, 2010 - Equine Cruelty Investigators Seminar / Large Animal Rescue Training Held from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. at our farm. This seminar is designed to help cruelty investigators feel confident working with and handling equines. Any cruelty investigator who does not work with horses on a regular basis would benefit from this instruction. This course will prepare you to feel more self assured around horses, have a better understanding of the equine mind, and be better prepared to determine when a horses needs are not being met. All participants receive a certificate of completion. Topics covered include: Case Histories, Horse Handling and Safety , Hoof Anatomy and Hoof Problems, Use of Height and Weight Tapes , Color and Breed Identification, Dental Care of Equines, Trailering Tips, Body Condition Scoring, Examining for Illness and Injury, Minimum Horse Care Standards, The Link - Animal Abuse and Violence Against People, and Large Animal Rescue.

October 2, 2010 - 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. - “Fall Festival” A fun family day in the country!Admission is $5 for families, $2 for adults, $1 for children under 12, and children under 6 are free OR you can download our "Free Passes" and bring your friends and family for FREE! The day’s highlight will be a contest with the horses in costume, starting at 1 p.m. You be the judge! The horses have already started shopping for their costumes which are sure to be a fun surprise for all. We also have a contest for our attendees so come in costume and you may win a prize!!

December 3, 2010 - 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. - Holiday Party. . Kick up your heels to help neglected and abused horses at Days End Farm Horse Rescue's annual Holiday Party at the Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville, Maryland. Advance tickets are $35.00 per person (plus a gift for the horses), or $325.00 for a table of ten. Tickets include an appetizer buffet, beer, wine and soda; a cash bar will be available throughout the evening. There will be dancing, door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses. Individuals can Sponsor a Horse for the holidays; in return, they receive a hand-painted horse ornament with a picture and story of one of our rescued horses.Don't hesitate! After November 25th, tickets are $40.00 per person (plus a gift for the horses). Seating is limited, so call to reserve your tickets NOW. Proceeds will benefit the rescued animals.
