On-Site and Off-Site Educational Programs
At Days End Farm Horse Rescue, we provide leadership in horse rescue and
rehabilitation, and in the prevention of horse abuse and neglect. We educate
and inspire diverse communities so they become part of our commitment to
celebrate, respect and protect horses. Sign up for our newsletter to receive updates on Days
End Farm animals and special educational opportunities.
On-Site Educational Programs
Farm Tours are available to the general public daily from 9:30 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. When you stop in, we will take you on a tour of the farm and
facilities, introduce you to some of our horses and show you before-and-after
pictures of successful rehabilitations. You'll have a chance to visit our
souvenir and tack shops, and gather informational materials about our
programs. No appointment is necessary for individual tours. To schedule a
group tour, please call 301-854-5037 or 410-442-1564. Free parking is
available. Donations are appreciated but not required. Directions.
Girl Scout Horse Lovers
Badge. Brownies and Girl Scouts can earn their Horse Lovers Badge
during a two-hour session at DEFHR. The girls learn about hoof care, basic
nutrition and anatomy before riding a horse they have groomed and tacked
themselves!
Farm Days are engaging
sessions for children age four and older. You and your charges will see a farm
in action, while getting up close and personal with horses and our petting zoo
animals. Handicapped children are easily accommodated.
Hands-On Equine Investigator
Classes offer experiential, learning-by-doing, training for
professionals who want to learn about equine handling and cruelty
investigation. Fire and rescue officers from many states have attended this
class, gaining invaluable insight into the behavior and handling of these
animals.
Horse Care Clinics.
Whether you are a past, present or future horse owner, you will come away from
these clinics more skilled and knowledgeable than you were before. At the very
least, you will know what to do with an injured horse BEFORE the vet arrives.
Internships. Interns are immersed in daily operations at Days End Farm,
gaining significant equine husbandry experience. They learn to recognize
equine cruelty and neglect, and what it takes to rehabilitate a severely
compromised animal. They also study horse psychology and its application in
training. This program is tailored to those seeking careers in a variety of
equine areas, such as rescue and rehabilitation, veterinary sciences, advocacy
and horsemanship.
Off-Site Educational Programs
Large Animal Rescue Training
(LART) is offered to horse owners, barn managers, fire and rescue
personnel, animal control agents, law enforcers, emergency medical
technicians, and the general public. You never know when you may need to come
to the rescue of a horse that can't get up, is stuck in a ravine or trapped in
an overturned trailer. DEFHR's Disaster Team has been helping rescue horses
for years, and has provided LART across the U.S. and in Europe.
Disaster Services.
Days End Farm helped rescue many animals after several floods and hurricanes,
including Katrina and Rita. Our immediate response team is well trained to
operate a fully equipped trailer at the scene of an animal needing medical
attention. We pride ourselves in creating an effective team environment, and
sharing our knowledge and expertise with everyone involved in the rescue
effort.
"Share a Heart"
School Visits. A Days End Farm professional would love to come to your
Maryland school to share stories about our horses, dramatic rescues and
successful rehabilitations! Presentations are tailored to a specified grade
level or class theme.
"Share a Heart"
Lectures. We will gladly come to your equine facility, organization or
business for a lecture on a topic of your choosing--from "So you think you
want a horse?", to how to start a horse rescue organization, to horse
advocacy, to the veterinarian's role in cruelty investigation.
